Appearing on UFC Tonight, UFC President Dana White announced that number 1 ranked Luke Rockhold will the next title shot against current middleweight champion Chris Weidman. No date or venue has been set for the event but Dana White said the information will be released as soon as it comes available. Considering that the annoucment came out the same time as the announcement that Cormier will defend his title against Alexander Gustafsson in the near future, it is probable that the two fights will be on the same card.

Weidman is coming a successful title defense against Vitor Belfort at UFC 187 and has a record of thirteen wins and zero defeats. Tha champion is undefeated in his UFC career and has some very impressive wins over the likes of Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, and Mark Munoz. Anderson Silva was on a 17 fight win streak before Weidman snapped it.

Rockhold last fought at UFC on Fox 15 – Machida vs. Rockhold on April 18, 2015. Rockhold submitted the former champion with a rear naked choke in the second round. Rockhold was the former Strikeforce champion before being bought out by Zuffa. His first UFC appearance was against MMA veteran Vitor Belfort and Rochold was knocked out in the first round.
